Maria Cecilia Oliveira ist Leiterin der transdisziplinären Forschungsgruppe "Demokratische Governance für ökopolitische Transformationen" (EcoPol) am RIFSPotsdam. Mit der EcoPol-Gruppe arbeitet sie derzeit an einer transdisziplinären Fallstudie im Amazonasbecken. Innerhalb des Amazonasbeckens sind die Forschungsbereiche Rechte der Natur, Umweltkrisen, indigener Aktivismus, Wissensproduktion, Populismus und die Entwicklung der Klimapolitik im Zusammenhang mit dem Pariser Abkommen. Oliveira leitete zuvor die Gruppen "Implementing the Paris Agreement" (2017-2018) und "Democratic re-configurations of sustainability transformations" (2019-2020). Sie ist außerdem Ko-Präsidentin der Amazonas-Sektion der Latin American Studies Association.
Oliveira erforscht die Beziehungen zwischen Demokratie und Ökopolitik. Sie konzentriert sich dabei auf Themen wie Klimawandelregime, Umweltgerechtigkeit, ökopolitische Transterritorialität und Wissenschafts- und Technologiestudien. Ein weiteres Interessengebiet ist die Wissenschaftskommunikation mit dem Ziel, Kunst und Politik durch Dialogforen, Dokumentarfilme, Podcasts, Performances und Vorträge miteinander zu verbinden.
Oliveira hat 2016 an der Päpstlichen Katholischen Universität in Sao Paulo, Brasilien, in internationalen Beziehungen promoviert. Einen Teil ihrer Doktorarbeit schrieb sie als Fulbright-Stipendiatin am Earth Institute der Columbia University (2013-2014) in New York mit dem Thema "Millennium Development Goals: sicheres Leben und planetarische Selbstverwaltung". Davor absolvierte sie einen Master in Internationalen Beziehungen an der Päpstlichen Katholischen Universität in Sao Paulo und einen weiteren Master als Alban-Stipendiatin an der Universität von Padua, Italien, in Kritischer Kriminologie und sozialer Prävention.
